India to Host Buddha Relic Exposition in Ladakh for Global Buddhist Community

In a landmark cultural and spiritual initiative, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today announced the Sacred Exposition of the Holy Relics of Tathagata, calling it a historic moment for India and the global Buddhist community. The announcement was made during a curtain raiser event held at the National Museum in New Delhi.
For the first time in India, the sacred relics of Lord Buddha—preserved at their original repository—will be brought out for public exposition, marking a rare and deeply significant spiritual event. The exposition will be held in Ladakh from May 1 to May 15, 2026, and is expected to draw global participation.
A Global Message of Peace in Times of Uncertainty
Describing the initiative as a "historic step for global peace," Shri Shekhawat emphasized that the exposition goes beyond religious significance, serving as a platform to spread the universal teachings of Lord Buddha—non-violence, compassion, and inner awakening.
"In a world marked by uncertainty and conflict, the timeless wisdom of Lord Buddha holds profound relevance. This exposition will serve as a powerful medium to promote peace and harmony across nations," the Minister said.
Ladakh Positioned as a Global Hub of Buddhist Heritage
Highlighting Ladakh's deep-rooted connection to Buddhist traditions, the Minister noted that the region is uniquely positioned as a global centre of Buddhist heritage. He added that hosting the exposition will not only offer spiritual enrichment but also significantly boost cultural and religious tourism in the region.
Officials pointed out that similar international exhibitions of Buddha relics have historically attracted large global audiences, strengthening India's cultural diplomacy and civilizational outreach.
15-Day Mega Event with International Participation
The exposition is being organized by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh and the International Buddhist Confederation. The event is expected to witness participation from:

Expansion to Zanskar and Grand Closing Ceremony
In a unique extension, the exposition will also reach Zanskar from May 11 to 12, enabling wider regional participation. The event will conclude with a grand closing ceremony in Leh on May 14, followed by the ceremonial departure of the sacred relics on May 15, 2026.

The initiative is being seen as a significant step in reinforcing India's position as the global epicentre of Buddhist heritage. The curtain raiser event was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Shri Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation, and senior officials from the Ministry of Culture.
