Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently ended a diplomatic disagreement with Spain regarding their colonial history, during her visit to Barcelona. She assured that there was never a diplomatic crisis.
Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of acknowledging the indigenous peoples' efforts. This resolution follows a public acknowledgment by Spain's King Felipe VI earlier this year regarding past colonial abuses.
The dispute began in 2019 when Sheinbaum's predecessor requested a formal apology from Spain, which was refused. Diplomatic ties were further strained when Felipe was not invited to Sheinbaum's inauguration. The reconciliation is now expected to bolster international relations.
