In a significant step toward strengthening India's traditional healthcare ecosystem, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the "Chintan Shivir 2026" in the national capital. The two-day strategic conclave brings together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to deliberate on key policy directions, institutional strengthening, and the future growth trajectory of the Ayush sector.

The high-level brainstorming event, scheduled to conclude on April 17, reflects the government's renewed push to position Ayush as a central pillar of India's healthcare and wellness framework, aligned with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Strengthening Policy, Bridging Gaps, Building Future Readiness

Addressing the inaugural session, Shri Prataprao Jadhav emphasized that the Chintan Shivir is not merely a review exercise but a forward-looking platform aimed at evaluating progress, identifying implementation gaps, and designing a practical, future-ready roadmap for the sector.

He highlighted the growing relevance of Ayush systems—Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy—in addressing lifestyle disorders and preventive healthcare, especially in the context of rising global demand for holistic and integrative medicine.

Positioning Ayush within a global framework, the Minister reiterated India's commitment to the vision of "One Earth, One Family, One Future" and the campaign of "Heal in India, Heal by India", aimed at transforming the country into a global hub for wellness and traditional medicine.

Increased Investment and Focus on Research & Innovation

The Minister noted that enhanced budgetary allocations for the Ayush sector reflect the government's commitment to strengthening:

  • Education and institutional infrastructure

  • Scientific research and validation

  • Global outreach and collaboration

He called for a whole-of-government approach, stressing the importance of inter-ministerial convergence, digitalisation, entrepreneurship, and innovation in scaling the sector.

A strong emphasis was placed on evidence-based research, a critical factor in enhancing global credibility and integrating traditional knowledge systems with modern medical science.

Key MoU to Expand Insurance Coverage for Ayush Treatments

One of the major highlights of the inaugural session was the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, and the General Insurance Council.

This landmark agreement aims to:

  • Expand insurance coverage for Ayush treatments

  • Improve claim settlement mechanisms

  • Standardise pricing and treatment benchmarks

The initiative is expected to significantly boost accessibility and affordability of Ayush therapies, while enhancing trust among patients and insurers.

Digital Outreach and Policy Reforms Launched

Further strengthening citizen engagement and transparency, the Ministry launched several key initiatives during the event:

  • Official WhatsApp Channel for real-time communication and public outreach

  • Release of a policy document on "Revision of Benchmark Rates for Insurance Coverage of Ayush Treatments"

  • Launch of a toll-free helpline (1800-11-0008) for Ayush insurance-related queries

These measures aim to streamline service delivery, improve transparency, and promote wider adoption of Ayush systems across the country.

Strategic Discussions on Innovation, Legal Frameworks and Global Integration

The first day of the Shivir featured three thematic sessions addressing critical dimensions of the sector:

  • Review of outcomes from Chintan Shivir 2023, setting the foundation for future policy direction

  • "Tradition to Translation" session, focusing on integrating traditional knowledge with scientific validation and global partnerships

  • Session on Litigation Management and Legal Preparedness, highlighting regulatory frameworks and legal readiness for sectoral expansion

These discussions reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing both opportunities and challenges in scaling the Ayush ecosystem.

Ayush as a Pillar of India's Healthcare Future

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, reiterated that the Shivir serves as a crucial platform for shaping a time-bound, actionable roadmap, while Joint Secretary Smt. Alarmelmangai D. emphasized the growing global recognition of Ayush and the need to strengthen institutional capacities and research ecosystems.

The role of young professionals, researchers, and innovators was also highlighted as critical to driving the next phase of growth in the sector.

Towards a Global Wellness Leadership

As India positions itself as a leader in integrative healthcare, the Chintan Shivir 2026 underscores the government's commitment to transforming Ayush into a globally competitive, evidence-driven, and innovation-led sector.

With policy reforms, digital initiatives, insurance integration, and research advancements, Ayush is poised to play a transformative role not only in India's healthcare system but also in the global wellness economy.

The deliberations at the Shivir are expected to translate into concrete actions that will shape the future of holistic healthcare—making Ayush a cornerstone of India's journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.
