The South African Police Service (SAPS) has assured citizens that the national security situation remains stable and under control following the sentencing of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, amid heightened public attention and widespread supporter gatherings.
Malema was sentenced to five years' direct imprisonment by the East London Regional Court in connection with a firearm handling and discharge case dating back to 2018. The conviction, delivered last October, included five counts, notably violations of the Firearms Control Act after Malema discharged a firearm during the EFF's anniversary celebrations.
Nationwide Monitoring as Supporters Gather
In response to the court proceedings, thousands of EFF supporters gathered outside courts in various parts of the country from early morning hours. SAPS confirmed that Public Order Policing units were deployed across multiple provinces as a precautionary measure to ensure safety and maintain law and order.
Despite the charged political environment, authorities reported that the demonstrations remained peaceful.
"Up until this hour, the SAPS has observed that, despite heightened emotions around recent developments, the marches have taken place without incident," the police said in an official statement.
Orderly Conduct Praised by Authorities
SAPS commended the conduct of EFF members and supporters, noting that their actions reflected a commitment to democratic principles and respect for the rule of law.
"This responsible conduct by EFF members and supporters reflects a shared commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights of others," the statement added.
Police confirmed that gatherings across the country have been orderly and calm, with no major disruptions reported.
Security Preparedness Remains in Place
While the situation remains stable, SAPS indicated that security deployments will continue as part of standard operational protocols, particularly given the political sensitivity of the case and the scale of public mobilisation.
The proactive presence of law enforcement is aimed at:
-
Preventing potential unrest
-
Ensuring public safety
-
Protecting infrastructure and court premises
-
Facilitating lawful protest
A Test for Democratic Institutions
The developments mark a significant moment in South Africa's political and legal landscape, as a high-profile political leader faces imprisonment. Observers note that the peaceful conduct of supporters reflects the resilience of democratic institutions and the public's adherence to constitutional processes.
Situation Remains Under Control
As of now, SAPS maintains that the situation across the country is calm, stable, and under control, with no indication of escalation.
Authorities have urged the public to continue exercising restraint and to engage in lawful, peaceful expression as the legal process unfolds.
