Italy Freezes Defence Agreement Amid Middle East Tensions
Italy's government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has suspended its automatic defence agreement renewal with Israel due to escalating Middle East conflicts. This move, decided with key ministers, ends military training collaborations, especially impacting Italian troops in Lebanon under a U.N. mandate.
In a significant diplomatic move, Italy has opted to suspend the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation pact with Israel. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced this strategic decision on Tuesday, attributing it to the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The right-wing government of Italy, historically an ally of Israel in Europe, has recently voiced criticism over Israeli military actions in Lebanon, affecting Italian troops operating under a U.N. mandate in the area. The decision marks a shift in diplomatic relations amid ongoing regional conflicts.
Meloni, along with foreign and defence ministers Antonio Tajani and Guido Crosetto, and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, made the decision on Monday. This suspension implies a halt in collaborative military training efforts with Israel. The Israeli foreign ministry has yet to comment on the situation.
