An inspection has revealed 49 violations of detention standards at the largest U.S. migrant detention camp, located in El Paso, Texas, sparking criticism from immigration advocates who oppose President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency's Office of Detention Oversight conducted a congressionally mandated inspection over three days in February. The report, released this week, highlighted deficiencies in areas such as the use of force, facility security, and medical care at the $1.2 billion Camp East Montana.
Amid heightened scrutiny of ICE facilities, advocacy groups argue that the administration's policies have created an unsafe environment for minority groups and raised concerns of racial profiling. Additionally, there have been 14 immigrant deaths in ICE custody this year, two at Camp East Montana, following 31 deaths in the previous year, the highest in two decades.
