China's central bank has taken a significant step in its digital currency initiative by adding a dozen new banks as operators of the digital yuan. This development confirms a prior report from Reuters regarding the expansion.
The newly added banks set to oversee the digital yuan include notable institutions such as China CITIC Bank, China Everbright Bank, China Guangfa Bank, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank among others, the People's Bank of China announced in a statement.
The move is designed to enhance the inclusivity of the digital yuan services and cater to public demand for safe, convenient, and efficient payment methods, as explained by the central bank.
