Guy Rivera Convicted of Manslaughter in NYPD Officer's Death
Guy Rivera has been convicted of aggravated manslaughter in the 2024 shooting death of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller. Although acquitted of murder, he faces life in prison. The trial revolved around whether Rivera intended to shoot Diller, with the defense claiming it was accidental and not premeditated.
Guy Rivera was convicted of aggravated manslaughter in the shooting death of Officer Jonathan Diller, but acquitted of murder, by a Queens jury. This case, stemming from a March 2024 traffic stop, became prominent in President Donald Trump's law-and-order campaign rhetoric.
Prosecutors asserted that Rivera intentionally shot Detective Diller, ignoring lawful commands, and argued that the evidence showed Rivera prepared the weapon deliberately. However, Rivera's lawyer maintained that the gun went off accidentally during a police scuffle.
Rivera, 36, will be sentenced on April 27 and potentially faces life imprisonment. The incident marked the first NYPD officer death on duty in two years and drew significant attention, including at Diller's funeral attended by Trump and thousands of others.
