Corporate Showdown: Vedanta and Adani Battle Over Jaiprakash Acquisition

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has instructed the Vedanta Group to make the Adani Group a party in its appeal challenging the National Company Law Tribunal’s (NCLT) approval of Adani's Rs 14,535 crore acquisition bid for Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL).
This decision came after a two-member NCLAT bench, led by Chairperson Justice Ashok Bhushan, emphasized that no ex-parte orders could be issued as Adani Enterprises had not been made a party in the case. The appeals by Vedanta contest both the validity of the resolution plan and its acceptance by creditors and the NCLT.
Vedanta's attempts to overturn the decision highlight the intense competition and strategic interests involved, as Adani's bid was endorsed for its swift and substantial financial commitments. Meanwhile, JAL, which holds significant assets, defaulted on loans totaling Rs 57,185 crore, prompting its acquisition under the insolvency process.
