Diplomatic Tensions Rise: German Ambassador's Controversial Post
Germany's Foreign Ministry supports its outgoing ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert, after Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized him for mentioning Israeli settler violence. Saar accused Seibert of focusing on settlers over condemning Israeli deaths. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul discussed the incident with Saar, concluding the matter.
Germany's Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed support for its outgoing ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert. This comes after Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar publicly criticized Seibert for referencing Israeli settler violence in a social media post.
The post by Seibert lamented the death of an Israeli farmer near the Lebanese border and injuries to Israelis from Iranian strikes, while also mentioning violence by Israeli settlers. Saar responded by questioning Seibert's focus on settler actions instead of solely condemning the farmer's death.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul engaged in a direct dialogue with Saar to address the diplomatic exchange, according to a ministry spokesperson, marking the issue as resolved. Historically, Germany has supported Israel but opposes violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.
