The law and order situation in Meghalaya's Garo Hills is showing signs of improvement, as evidenced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's recent briefing to Governor CH Vijayashankar about the violence-hit region. CM Sangma, along with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, emphasized that life is gradually returning to normal.
Protests escalated into violence after the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) barred non-tribals from the upcoming elections. The fallout included arson attacks and violence, leading to internet suspension and a government-imposed curfew. In response, the government postponed the April elections and removed the council chief.
The Chief Minister has stayed in constant communication with the governor, detailing efforts to restore order and highlighting arrests made amid the unrest. As the situation stabilizes, the internet ban has been lifted but officials remain vigilant.
