India has set an ambitious goal to contribute at least 10% to global 6G standards and patents, as it positions itself to play a leading role in shaping the next generation of global telecommunications, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said.
Speaking at the International Workshop on 6G Standardization at Vigyan Bhawan, the Minister outlined a strategic vision anchored in global cooperation, indigenous innovation, and inclusive growth.
Four Pillars to Shape Global Telecom Architecture
Scindia emphasised that India's role in the evolving 6G ecosystem will be guided by four key pillars:
-
Global interoperability: Seamless communication across devices, networks, and services
-
Common technical frameworks: Collaboration with global bodies like 3GPP and ITU for unified standards
-
Innovation acceleration: Enabling research, startups, and industry through clear global benchmarks
-
Inclusive growth: Leveraging open standards to democratise access and promote indigenous innovation
"To realise this vision, sustained international cooperation and continuous engagement are essential," he said.
Bharat 6G Vision Gains Momentum
The Minister highlighted the establishment of the Bharat 6G Alliance in 2022, which laid the foundation for India's long-term strategy in next-generation telecom.
"Our ambition is clear—to contribute meaningfully to global standards while ensuring that technology benefits every citizen," Scindia noted.
India's Growing Role in Global Standardisation
The workshop, organised by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), brought together global experts, industry leaders, and policymakers to align India's roadmap with international developments.
Advisor (Technology), DoT, Shubhendu Tiwari, said India's increasing participation in global standard-setting forums reflects its rising technical capability and innovation potential.

Scaling from Research to Deployment
A dedicated session on India's roadmap to 2030 emphasised the need to:
-
Scale pre-6G research initiatives
-
Strengthen collaboration between government, academia, and industry
-
Transition from pilot projects to commercial deployment
Open Standards to Drive Inclusion
Scindia stressed that open and interoperable standards will be key to ensuring equitable participation in the global telecom ecosystem.
"6G is not just about technology—it is about democratising opportunity and connecting people, possibilities, and progress," he said.
Toward a Global, Inclusive 6G Ecosystem
With rapid advances in connectivity, AI, and digital infrastructure, India is aiming to move from being a large telecom market to a global standard-setter and innovation hub.
The workshop marks a significant step in aligning India's ambitions with global developments, as the country seeks to build a secure, resilient, and inclusive 6G future.
