The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has unveiled two data-driven Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) bulletins, showcasing India's progress on environmental sustainability and economic transformation.

Released during a national workshop on SDG monitoring and statistical systems, the reports—"Planet in Focus" and "Delivering Prosperity at Scale"—offer a comprehensive snapshot of India's development trajectory using official data from the SDG National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report 2025.

New Data Series to Track India's SDG Journey

The bulletins are part of a new thematic series aligned with the five pillars of the UN's 2030 Agenda: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships.

MoSPI said the initiative aims to:

  • Simplify complex SDG data for policymakers and the public

  • Highlight key achievements and gaps

  • Strengthen evidence-based planning and monitoring

Planet Focus: Major Gains in Sanitation, Sustainability

The "Planet in Focus" bulletin highlights India's progress across environmental SDGs, including water, climate, biodiversity, and sustainable consumption.

Key achievements include:

  • Expansion of waste recycling plants from 829 (2019–20) to 3,036 (2024–25)

  • Strengthened disaster resilience aligned with the Sendai Framework (2015–2030)

The report underscores India's growing focus on:

  • Climate mitigation and adaptation

  • Sustainable water and waste management

  • Biodiversity conservation

It also highlights India's increasing role in global environmental governance.

Prosperity Focus: Growth, Energy Transition, Inclusion

The second bulletin, "Delivering Prosperity at Scale," tracks progress across economic and infrastructure-related SDGs.

Key highlights:

  • India is now the 4th largest wind energy producer globally

  • Renewable energy share rose from 16.02% (2015–16) to 22.13% (2024–25)

  • Carbon intensity of the power sector reduced from 61.45 to 40.52 tonnes CO₂ per ₹ crore

  • 100% household electrification achieved in a rapid last-mile push

  • 99% mobile network coverage, driving digital inclusion

The report also points to the growing role of tourism:

  • Contributing 2.6% to GDP

  • Generating significant employment and foreign exchange

Infrastructure and Inclusion Driving Growth

MoSPI emphasised that India's progress is being driven by:

  • Large-scale infrastructure expansion

  • Digital connectivity

  • Entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems

  • Inclusive policy frameworks targeting underserved populations

These factors are helping translate economic growth into broad-based prosperity.

Data-Led Policy Making

The bulletins highlight the importance of robust statistical systems in tracking development outcomes and guiding policy decisions.

By consolidating indicators, initiatives, and outcomes, the reports aim to support:

  • Better governance and accountability

  • Improved coordination across sectors

  • Evidence-based development strategies

Strengthening India's SDG Narrative

With these bulletins, MoSPI is positioning India's SDG journey as both data-driven and globally relevant, demonstrating progress across critical areas of sustainability and economic growth.

The ministry said future editions will continue to track advancements across all five SDG pillars, offering deeper insights into India's development progress.
