Mizoram Assembly Approves Groundbreaking Legislation in Landmark Session
The Mizoram Legislative Assembly passed 10 significant Bills during its Budget session, including a Bill to ban polygamy and enhance women's rights. The session also adopted a resolution for the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Constitution. The session adjourned sine die after approving the annual Budget.

In a landmark 28-day session, the Mizoram Legislative Assembly approved 10 government Bills, including groundbreaking legislation to ban polygamy and strengthen women's rights, during its Budget session.
The session concluded on Monday with the draft approval of a Rs 17,469.91 crore annual Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 and supplementary grants for 2025-26. This session also saw the assembly unanimously passing the 'Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Bill, 2026', significantly improving women's property rights. Other noteworthy Bills included the 'Mizoram (Prevention of Public Land Encroachment) Bill, 2026', and a Bill to relocate the proposed state university site.
Further, a resolution was unanimously adopted to include the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Speaker Lalbiakzama commended the members for maintaining decorum throughout the session, which handled over 1,600 questions submitted by assembly members.
