Palestinian Activist Released from Texas Detention
Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian woman detained in Texas, was released on bond after over a year in detention. She was arrested during pro-Palestinian protests in 2024 against Israel's Gaza war. Her release comes amid claims of inhumane detention conditions and ongoing debates over the characterization of Palestinian activism.
Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian woman held in a Texas immigration detention center, has been released on bond. This decision, following more than a year of detention, comes as a relief amidst controversies surrounding anti-Palestinian activism crackdowns implemented during President Trump's administration.
Kordia, who grew up in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was detained in 2025 after allegedly overstaying her student visa. Her legal team argues she was in the process of securing legal residency. Her arrest in 2024 stemmed from her participation in protests at Columbia University against Israel's military actions in Gaza.
The release, ordered by Immigration Judge Tara Naselow-Nahas, highlighted issues with detention conditions described as "filthy" and "inhumane." Kordia's case has ignited debates over the interpretation of pro-Palestinian activism, with allegations that such protests are being mislabeled as antisemitic, overshadowing genuine calls for Palestinian rights.
