From Coal to Community: The Bishrampur Transformation

Bishrampur, once a thriving coal mine, now serves as a beacon of transformation in central India. The site, which yielded over 38.7 million tons of coal before depleting in 2018, has been repurposed into a tourism destination. This transformation offers sustainable livelihood options for the local community.

The regeneration project, funded partly by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd, involves local women managing the site. They operate boats and a floating restaurant, overcoming traditional gender roles and boosting their confidence as entrepreneurs. However, challenges remain, such as insufficient promotion and maintenance issues.

Additional development includes a solar park providing jobs for the community. While the project showcases potential, the need for strategic enhancements is evident to ensure the site continues to serve as a sustainable model for post-mining land use. Local authorities and SECL are urged to ensure ongoing support.
