China's Diplomatic Dance: Easing Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan
Chinese diplomatic efforts, including messages from President Xi Jinping, have helped reduce tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the worst since the Taliban's return in 2021. The involvement of China comes amid ongoing border clashes and previous mediation attempts by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey amid conflict in the Middle East.
Chinese mediation efforts, underscored by a message from President Xi Jinping, have played a critical role in de-escalating the intense conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, government officials from Pakistan report. A significant meeting occurred between China's ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where Xi's call for ceasing hostilities was conveyed.
In recent days, both nations have refrained from reporting air strikes, and ground skirmishes along the extensive 2,600-km border have diminished, though some clashes persist. Beijing, actively engaging both countries for peace, did not receive a response from Mosharraf Zaidi, Sharif's spokesperson, on these efforts.
Despite this diplomatic progress, Pakistani military officials indicate ongoing operations until militant threats are neutralized. The international focus shifts to China's proactive diplomatic role amidst Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey's engagement in the Middle East turmoil following strikes on Iran.
