Authorities in Cyprus have taken into custody a suspect believed to be a member of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, who is wanted in Germany on charges of procuring weapons and ammunition for attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets. The Lebanese-born individual, referred to as Kamel M. for privacy reasons, was captured at Larnaca airport on March 6 after arriving from Lebanon, according to German federal prosecutors.
The case involves the transport of 300 rounds of live ammunition, although details about the ammunition's origin or intended destination remain unclear. Prosecutors allege that this was part of preparations for lethal Hamas attacks on Israeli or Jewish institutions in Europe, particularly Germany.
A subsequent raid was conducted at the suspect's apartment in Berlin. If extradited to Germany, Kamel M. will face a judge who will decide on his pre-trial detention. The context of this arrest is marked by an increase in global attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions after Israel's conflict with Hamas in 2023.
