Hungary's Seizure Sparks Diplomatic Tensions with Ukraine

Hungary's ruling Fidesz party has put forth a controversial proposal to retain $82 million worth of cash and gold, seized from Ukrainian bank vehicles, for two months pending an investigation. This development escalates tensions between Hungary and Ukraine, which has accused Hungary of theft.

The proposal, submitted to parliament on Monday, could see a vote as early as Tuesday. Diplomatic relations are already strained, primarily due to Hungary’s close ties with Russia. These tensions worsened last week when Hungary detained seven Ukrainians suspected of money laundering while transporting the funds.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha demanded the immediate return of the assets, labeling Hungary's actions as an "unprecedented act of state banditism." Ukraine has further accused Hungary of excessive force and legal violations against its citizens, as the Hungarian parliament considers a bill to legalize the asset retention.
