In a landmark decision on Monday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court annulled the election of Congress MLA Mukesh Malhotra for concealing criminal charges during the 2024 bypoll. This act, deemed a 'corrupt practice,' misled the electorate, significantly impacting the electoral outcome.
The court ruled in favor of BJP candidate Ramniwas Rawat, who was initially the runner-up, declaring him the elected MLA from Vijaypur. Justice GS Ahluwalia noted that Malhotra's suppression of information regarding two pending criminal cases obstructed voters’ ability to make informed decisions.
Leader of the Opposition, Umang Singhar, announced plans to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court, asserting that the people of Vijaypur originally supported Congress. Meanwhile, Rawat's camp highlights the importance of transparency in electoral processes, emphasizing the necessity for candidates to disclose any criminal involvement fully.
