MACT Awards Rs 5 Lakh to Family 23 Years After Tragic Motorcycle Accident

In a long-delayed judgment, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane has granted a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Serena M. Pereira, a woman tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in 2003.
The ruling by Judge K P Shrikhande directs the truck and motorcycle owners to pay the compensation at 9% annual interest starting March 2024. The case was marred by delays due to insufficient diligence from the petitioners.
The 2003 incident, involving a motorcycle and a speeding truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, resulted in Serena's death. The tribunal dismissed allegations against the Thane Municipal Transport, focusing liability on the truck and motorcycle owners.
