In an unprecedented move, 130 Maoists have laid down their arms in Telangana, marking the largest mass surrender of its kind in recent history. The militants handed over 124 firearms, including AK-47 rifles, to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday.
The majority of these Maoists hail from Chattisgarh, with only a handful from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The handover has drastically weakened the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and hampered the operational capabilities of the CPI (Maoist) in the region, according to DGP B Shivadhar Reddy.
Chief Minister Reddy called on remaining underground Maoist leaders to surrender and integrate back into society, promising state support in terms of healthcare, financial assistance, and housing. A committee may also be formed to address pending legal cases against the surrendered cadres.
