Macron's Nuclear Shift: France Strengthens European Deterrence
France, under President Emmanuel Macron, is aligning its nuclear deterrent strategy more closely with European allies while retaining control over strike decisions. This reflects Europe's growing doubts about US defense reliability. Macron's move could alter nuclear policies by allowing temporary deployment of nuclear-armed aircraft to allied countries.

In a significant shift in nuclear policy, France is realigning its deterrent capabilities in closer coordination with European allies. This unprecedented move by President Emmanuel Macron aims to fortify the continent's strategic autonomy while maintaining France’s exclusive decision-making power over nuclear strikes.
The initiative comes amidst growing skepticism about the reliability of US defense commitments to Europe. France, remaining the EU's only nuclear power post-Brexit, seeks to offer a form of nuclear security guarantee to its neighbors to counter a more assertive Russia and a rising China.
Macron announced that eight nations, including prominent EU members, have begun discussions to link their territories with France's deterrence strategy. The policy, termed 'forward deterrence,' might also involve deployment of French nuclear-armed aircraft to allied nations, enhancing joint European defense while supporting NATO roles.
