From President to Prison: Yoon Suk Yeol's Dramatic Fall

Yoon Suk Yeol, the former President of South Korea, issued an apology for his 2024 attempt to impose martial law, just as a Seoul court sentenced him to life in prison for insurrection. Describing the martial law decree as a mission of 'sincerity and purpose,' Yoon decried the ruling as politically motivated.

The Seoul Central District Court convicted Yoon of undermining constitutional order by ordering military intervention to arrest political adversaries. Despite stepping down from office and maintaining his innocence, Yoon labeled the charges unfounded. He urged his supporters to 'unite and rise' in the face of judicial uncertainty.

Despite some regret expressed by prosecutors over the life sentence, they did not reveal plans to appeal. Yoon's brief martial law declaration, although quashed by parliament, provoked widespread protests and national unrest.
