Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar on Tuesday inaugurated a new Souvenir Shop at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC) in New Delhi, marking a step toward promoting cultural heritage, supporting artisans and deepening public engagement with the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

The initiative aims to showcase curated souvenirs, books and handcrafted products inspired by Dr. Ambedkar's life, constitutional vision and enduring message of social justice, equality and empowerment.

Floral Tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

The programme began with a floral tribute at the 18-foot statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar located on the DAIC campus. The statue, sculpted by renowned artist Ram V. Sutar, stands as a symbol of constitutional values and social reform.

Dr. Virendra Kumar offered flowers at the statue, paying homage to Dr. Ambedkar's contributions to equality, education and justice.

Promoting Heritage and Creative Enterprise

Following the tribute, the Minister formally opened the Souvenir Shop and toured the facility, reviewing its collection of:

  • Books and publications on Dr. Ambedkar's life and philosophy

  • Thematic gift items reflecting constitutional values

  • Handmade products crafted by artisans

  • Educational and commemorative materials

The shop is designed to serve as both a cultural space and an economic enabler, supporting creative communities while enhancing visitor experience at the Centre.

Supporting Artisans and Inclusive Development

During his interaction, the Minister emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting India's artistic traditions.

He noted that initiatives such as the Souvenir Shop can generate livelihood opportunities for artisans and contribute to inclusive growth and empowerment.

Dr. Virendra Kumar also highlighted that the facility would benefit visitors, scholars and researchers who frequent DAIC for academic discussions, seminars and cultural programmes, offering them meaningful memorabilia connected to Dr. Ambedkar's legacy.

Senior Officials and Scholars in Attendance

The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, representatives from the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial (DANM), scholars, staff members and invited guests.

The programme concluded with an interaction session over high tea, where attendees appreciated the initiative and its role in strengthening cultural outreach and heritage preservation.

The inauguration reflects the government's continued efforts to honour Dr. Ambedkar's legacy while linking cultural promotion with livelihood support and public awareness.
