The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued an urgent reminder to social grant beneficiaries to respond immediately to SMS notifications requesting them to present themselves for grant reviews, warning that failure to do so could result in grants lapsing or payments being suspended.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency said beneficiaries who receive an official SMS calling them to undergo a review must visit their nearest SASSA office without delay to avoid disruptions in grant payments.
Grant Reviews Required by Law
SASSA explained that social grant reviews are a legislated requirement under the Social Assistance Act, aimed at ensuring that social grants are paid only to eligible and deserving beneficiaries.
The review process plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of the social assistance system and ensuring that public funds reach those who qualify.
"Beneficiaries are required to undergo a grant review process to verify their continued eligibility for social assistance, prevent fraud or duplicate claims, which could result in the misuse of public funds, which is an offence," the agency said.
Update Contact Details to Avoid Missing Notifications
SASSA stressed the importance of beneficiaries keeping their personal contact details updated on the agency's system to ensure that communication is effective and grant status updates are received promptly.
"Beneficiaries must ensure that their contact details are updated on the SASSA system. Having updated details will confirm eligibility and life certification, including strengthening communication between the beneficiary and the Agency," SASSA said.
Accurate contact information ensures beneficiaries receive critical notifications that may affect the continuation of their grants.
Reviews Help Prevent Fraud and Misuse of Funds
The agency noted that the review process is also essential in preventing fraudulent claims, duplicate registrations and improper access to grants.
Grant reviews help protect the social security system from abuse, ensuring that assistance remains available for vulnerable citizens who genuinely depend on it.
Reviews Currently Conducted at SASSA Offices
At present, grant reviews are conducted in person at designated SASSA offices and service centres.
However, the agency indicated that it may introduce online review options in future to reduce congestion at physical offices and lower travel costs for beneficiaries, particularly in remote areas.
Toll-Free Support Available
Beneficiaries seeking further information or clarity are encouraged to contact SASSA directly via its toll-free call centre:
0800 60 10 11(Available during working hours, Monday to Friday)
SASSA reiterated that beneficiaries should take SMS review requests seriously and act promptly to ensure uninterrupted grant support.
