Stuart Calman Appointed New Zealand’s Climate Change Ambassador

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts has announced the appointment of senior diplomat Stuart Calman as New Zealand's new Climate Change Ambassador, strengthening the country's international climate engagement at a pivotal time for global cooperation.
Mr Calman will take up the Wellington-based role immediately, with his appointment formally beginning on Monday 16 February 2026.
Supporting Regional Cooperation Ahead of COP31
Minister Watts said Mr Calman brings deep expertise across foreign policy, trade, development and climate policy, with a strong focus on regional partnerships.
"I am pleased to welcome Stuart to this role, given his expertise in foreign policy, trade and development, along with strong climate policy experience," Mr Watts said.
A key priority for 2026 will be supporting Australia as it prepares to chair UN Climate COP31, in partnership with Pacific nations.
"Stuart brings an excellent understanding of opportunities for enhanced cooperation with the Pacific and Southeast Asia," Mr Watts said.
"His expertise will be beneficial in supporting New Zealand's economic, trade and climate goals."
Extensive Diplomatic and Climate Policy Experience
Mr Calman most recently served as New Zealand's Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta from 2022 to 2024.
He has held a range of leadership roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, focusing on:

Background and Whakapapa
Mr Calman studied Business, Economics and Development at Massey University. His whakapapa includes Ngāti Toa, Raukawa ki te Tonga and Kāi Tahu.
Transition in the Ambassador Role
Mr Calman replaces outgoing Climate Change Ambassador Stuart Horne, who has taken up a new position as New Zealand's Consul-General in Honolulu.
The appointment comes as New Zealand continues to advance its international climate leadership, strengthen Pacific partnerships, and contribute to global negotiations in the lead-up to COP31.
