Supreme Court Seeks Guidelines for Judicial Sensitivity in Sexual Offences

The Supreme Court has directed the National Judicial Academy to form an expert committee to develop guidelines focusing on increased sensitivity in judicial proceedings pertaining to sexual offences. This move underscores the need for compassionate handling of cases involving vulnerable victims.

Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N.V. Anjaria, stressed that prior efforts lacked comprehensive understanding and on-ground impact. The committee will examine past initiatives and consult domain experts to enhance the approach of judges in such sensitive matters.

The apex court emphasized that the committee should consider linguistic diversity and ensure the guidelines are accessible to laypersons, particularly victims who are often from marginalized sections. The court highlighted the importance of grounding judicial procedures in compassion and understanding.
