The Supreme Court has rejected a plea from the Delhi government challenging a Delhi High Court ruling on the retrospective enhancement of salaries for law researchers.
A bench, presided over by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, opted to uphold the High Court's decision. The justices questioned why younger employees should face adverse financial consequences due to government procrastination.
The Delhi government argued that this ruling would place a Rs. 9.45 crore unbudgeted burden on the state exchequer. However, the Supreme Court determined that the salary increase—from Rs 65,000 to Rs 80,000, effective from October 2022—would stand as mandated by the High Court.
