Arundhati Roy, renowned Indian novelist and Booker Prize winner, announced her withdrawal from the Berlin Film Festival. Her decision comes in response to remarks by the festival jury's head suggesting filmmakers steer clear of political themes. Roy described these comments as "shocking" and "disgusting."
German director Wim Wenders, the head of this year's jury, stated a preference for films to avoid political subjects, asserting that cinema should serve as a counterbalance to political discourse. Jury member Ewa Puszczynska echoed this sentiment, finding it unfair to judge government positions, particularly on sensitive matters like the Gaza conflict.
Roy, who was slated to present a film she wrote, condemned the idea of excluding politics from art, emphasizing the role of artists in addressing humanitarian crises. This controversy underscores ongoing global tensions surrounding the Gaza situation and highlights the festival's complex position amidst international conflicts.
