Odisha's High Seizure Rates Highlight Cannabis Trafficking Trends in India
Since 2020, India has seized nearly 39 lakh kg of cannabis-based drugs, with Odisha accounting for most recoveries. Trafficking patterns show regional shifts. Technologies and border forces are used for countermeasures.

Recent government data reveals that India has confiscated 38.89 lakh kg of cannabis-based drugs since 2020, highlighting Odisha as a major state for seizures, comprising over 27% of the total. Despite fluctuations, a significant recovery occurred in 2025.
Distinct changes in trafficking patterns have been observed. Rajasthan experienced a dramatic increase, escalating from 14,826 kg in 2020 to 58,146 kg in 2025. Similarly, West Bengal saw a rise. Conversely, traditional hotspots like Andhra Pradesh showed declines, with significant decreases from 2.01 lakh kg in 2021 to 44,182 kg in 2025.
The government has intensified efforts against drug trafficking by implementing advanced technologies, AI, motion detectors, drones, and augmented cooperation with bordering nations to counteract drug syndicates.
