Diplomatic Tensions Rise as Russia and Germany Expel Envoys in Spy Dispute
Russia has expelled a German diplomat in retaliation for Germany's expulsion of a Russian diplomat, accusing Berlin of overreacting with 'spy mania'. Germany denies the espionage claims and criticizes Moscow's actions. European security services warn of Russia's intelligence activities. Britain has also expelled a Russian diplomat recently.
Diplomatic tensions between Russia and Germany have escalated with Russia expelling a German diplomat, a response sparked by Germany's removal of a Russian diplomat last month. Moscow accused Berlin of succumbing to 'spy mania', labeling the spying allegations as baseless.
The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the German Embassy's head in Moscow, asserting that the accusations were unfounded and fabricated. Germany dismissed the allegations. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, on a visit to Brunei, criticized Moscow's actions as unjustified retaliation.
The expulsion dispute unfolds amid warnings from European security services about Russian intelligence activities aimed at discouraging Western support for Ukraine. Similarly, in a reciprocal action, Britain expelled a Russian diplomat following a previous expulsion by Moscow.
