The famine crisis in Sudan's western Darfur region has escalated, now affecting the towns of Umm Baru and Kernoi, according to a global hunger monitoring group. This dire situation comes amid an ongoing power struggle between Sudan's military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has plunged the nation into a catastrophic humanitarian crisis recognized by the United Nations.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported worsening famine conditions in Darfur and South Kordofan, where a recent RSF attack on a military hospital killed 22 people, including medical staff. Meanwhile, the fallout of war, including disruption of food supplies and sieges, has increased the threat of starvation across Sudan.
The IPC's latest report brings the number of famine-stricken regions in Sudan to nine. With over 14 million displaced and tens of thousands of casualties, experts emphasize that a ceasefire is critical to prevent further starvation and loss of life in the affected areas.
