India Navigates Chabahar Port Challenges Amid US Sanctions Shift

In a recent parliamentary session, India's government emphasized its ongoing efforts to mitigate the effects of recent US sanctions on its role in the Chabahar Port project in Iran. Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the government about the repercussions of these policy changes.

The government outlined India's financial involvement, confirming a USD 120 million commitment to the project, consistent with an agreement with Iran. This comes amid questions regarding India's diplomatic interactions with the US and others over the past two years to ensure the project's progression.

Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, detailed that the US State Department revoked a previous sanctions waiver, complicating ties. However, following discussions, the waiver was conditionally extended. The Indian government continues to engage with relevant parties to address these diplomatic challenges.
