A 42-year-old graphic designer from Mumbai fell victim to an elaborate matrimonial scam, losing Rs 17.73 lakh to a man she encountered through a matrimonial website, police reported on Wednesday.
The perpetrator, using the alias Viraj Balasaheb Bhosale, claimed to be an NGO chairman linked to government schemes. Despite his promises of marriage and aid, he managed to siphon off the victim's money by feigning a need for a 'token amount' to secure housing.
The scam deepened when the victim, entrapped by his charm and deceit, procured and transferred additional loans at his request. After extracting the funds, the suspect became evasive and resorted to threats, leaving the victim little choice but to approach the police. The accused remains at large.
