WASHINGTON, Feb 3 - In a dramatic move, New York and New Jersey have launched a legal battle against the Trump administration, demanding the restoration of funding for the critical $16 billion Hudson River tunnel project. This lawsuit, filed in Manhattan's U.S. District Court, seeks an emergency order as construction faces an imminent halt on Friday.
President Donald Trump announced the termination of the project in October, with the Transportation Department holding back essential financial support initially approved during Joe Biden's presidency. This stance threatens to derail the project, endangering significant infrastructure efforts in the region.
The legal challenge, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James and acting New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, underscores the urgency as the Gateway Development Commission also joined the fray earlier this week. Without the much-needed funds, construction is set to stall, potentially leaving around 1,000 workers without jobs.
