Rebel Drone Strike Highlights Tensions in Congo

The leader of the AFC/M23 rebel movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo boldly claimed responsibility for a drone strike on Kisangani's airport on Tuesday. Labeling it a warning, the rebels criticized the government's use of the strategic northeastern city as a military hub.

The Tshopo province government stated that eight explosive-laden drones targeted the airport but were intercepted before hitting their mark. This airport, positioned about 17 km from Kisangani's center, lies far from the active combat zones in North and South Kivu provinces, where the rebels have significantly expanded their controlled regions since 2022.

Following the incident, rebel leader Corneille Nangaa declared the operation a demonstration of breaking Congo's air superiority. Despite recent ceasefire monitoring efforts facilitated by Qatari diplomacy, the rebels stressed that military operations over their territories could prompt further confrontations.
