Among the measures are asset freezes, travel bans, and director disqualification sanctions against senior police chiefs, Revolutionary Guard figures, and judges linked to oppressive actions. Britain's foreign minister, Yvette Cooper, praised the courage of the Iranian people amidst harsh oppression.
The UK's actions align with those of the EU and the US, further escalating tensions after nuclear negotiation talks faltered following recent protests. Iran's parliament has retaliated by labeling EU armies as terrorist groups after the EU's similar designation of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.
