In a recent development, the National Guard's presence in Washington, D.C., is set to continue through the year's end. This decision comes in light of a memo reviewed by The Associated Press, signed by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll.
The memo outlines the necessity of extending the mission beyond the initially planned timeframe to support President Donald Trump's initiatives aimed at upholding law and order. Meanwhile, President Trump has retracted plans to deploy National Guard troops to cities like Chicago and Los Angeles, which had sparked legal disputes. Additionally, he eased his earlier position on invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota.
At present, the National Guard's duties in Washington include street patrols and maintaining cleanliness. President Trump has claimed a significant decrease in city crime levels. However, during the Thanksgiving period, two troops from West Virginia were shot, resulting in the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20.
