A police sub-inspector in Pune has been apprehended for allegedly demanding an exorbitant bribe of Rs 2 crore from the legal representative of an accused in an economic offence case. According to officials, the officer accepted Rs 45.5 lakh as an installment of the bribe.
The lawyer's client and his father were facing charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal breach of trust, with the father already in judicial custody. The sub-inspector, Pramod Chintamani, was part of the Economic Offences Wing and initially demanded Rs 2 lakh from the lawyer to support the bail application of the accused.
However, the lawyer reported the demand to the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The bureau orchestrated a sting operation and caught the officer red-handed near a temple in Pune, accepting a bribe installment. Chintamani now faces charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act as investigations continue.
