An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 25 years in a Canadian prison for his role in a 2022 homicide at a golf club on the University of British Columbia grounds. This sentence comes a day after being found guilty by the Supreme Court of British Columbia of first-degree murder and arson.

Balraj Basra was convicted alongside two other men, Iqbal Kang and Deandre Baptiste. Kang received a 17-year sentence with an additional five-year concurrent term for arson. Baptiste was handed a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 17 years after the fatal shooting and subsequent arson.

The trio set fire to a vehicle after shooting 38-year-old Vishal Walia, prompting police intervention. Officers from the Vancouver Police Department, along with other agencies, arrested the suspects shortly after the incident.
