In a promising move for Asian diplomacy, Japan's newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have paved the way towards more harmonious relations. Their recent meeting, held amidst concerns over Takaichi's conservative stance, marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties.
Despite worries over potential discord, Takaichi and Xi emphasized strategic, mutually advantageous cooperation. The dialogue, part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, addressed Takaichi's defense policies, aiming to counteract China's regional domination but also outlined numerous areas ripe for collaborative efforts.
Notably, talks touched on pressing issues such as Beijing's rare earths export control, regional maritime security, and human rights validations for minority groups in China. With her agenda aligning closely with her predecessor, Takaichi stressed the urgency of maintaining a constructive Japan-China dynamic while also highlighting Japan's strategic alliances in the Pacific.
