Countdown Begins for Next Chief Justice of India: Who Will Lead?
The process to appoint the next Chief Justice of India has started as Chief Justice B R Gavai prepares to retire on November 23. Justice Surya Kant is expected to be named his successor, taking office on November 24 and serving until February 9, 2027.

The government initiated proceedings on Thursday for the appointment of a new Chief Justice of India as the current incumbent, B R Gavai, is set to retire on November 23, sources confirmed.
A letter requesting Justice Gavai to name his successor could be delivered as early as today, according to insiders familiar with the judicial appointment procedure. The memorandum of procedure directs that the senior most suitable Supreme Court judge should be appointed to the position.
Currently, Justice Surya Kant is the senior most judge and is likely to succeed as the new Chief Justice of India. He will assume office on November 24, with his term set to last until February 9, 2027.
