The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded accountability from the police departments of Kerala, Manipur, and Tripura following reports of attacks on journalists in recent months.
According to the NHRC, three separate incidents occurred: one in Kerala, one in Manipur, and another in Tripura. These attacks have prompted the Commission to seek explanations and detailed reports from the police within two weeks.
In the most recent case in Tripura, a journalist was reportedly assaulted by a group using sticks and sharp weapons during a political event, also resulting in the theft of his motorcycle. A journalist in Manipur sustained serious injuries after being shot twice with an air gun while covering a flower festival, and a journalist in Kerala was attacked while attending a personal event. Each incident has led to police cases and hospitalizations, emphasizing the pressing nature of these attacks on media personnel.
