Fugitives Among Ranks: Bangladesh Tribunal Puts Military Under Scrutiny
Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal has warned that 15 army officers will be declared fugitives unless they appear in court. With arrest warrants out for 16 serving officers and others, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, tensions rise as the government prepares for a controversial trial.
The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal has issued a stark warning to the army, stating that 15 serving officers will be declared fugitives if not presented in court. The tribunal had previously issued arrest warrants against them for alleged crimes during a past regime.
ICT-BD Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim emphasized the need for the officers to face justice, citing the International Crimes Tribunal Act which mandates their appearance. Meanwhile, the army stated they have already taken 15 of the officers into military custody, despite not receiving formal warrants.
The impending trial has sparked controversy and unease in Bangladesh, with political parties like the BNP urging caution in relations with the military. The situation remains tense as the government moves forward with plans to prosecute high-profile figures from the previous government.
