In a significant development, 61 Naxalites, including senior leader M Venugopal, also known as Bhupati, have surrendered to the authorities in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district. Officials confirmed the news on Tuesday, marking a major victory in the region's anti-insurgency efforts.
Bhupati, who had a significant cash bounty on his head, and his cohorts turned themselves in late on Monday night. The surrender includes a member of the CPI (Maoist) central committee and 10 members of the divisional committee, signifying a substantial blow to the insurgent organization.
The mass surrender is being viewed as a critical turning point in the battle against Naxalism in the region. It reflects both increased pressure and successful strategies by law enforcement agencies aimed at encouraging militants to abandon the armed struggle.
