The ancient town of Thimi comes alive with the vibrant Sindoor Jatra, marking the Newar community's celebration of Nepali New Year 2081. The festival sees 26 elaborately decorated palanquins making their way to the Balkumari Temple, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Dhime drums and the sprinkling of orange vermilion powder, signifying prosperity and joy.
As part of this age-old tradition, devotees, along with tourists, participate in smearing each other's faces with Sindoor while touring the town's deities, indulging in traditional music, dance, and festivities. Sudeep Shrestha, a festive participant, shares, "We engage in these merry practices to share greetings and celebrate our cultural heritage."
Once held with 32 palanquins, the modern celebration still retains its vibrancy, with musicians playing Dhimay Baja adding to the atmospheric revelry. The sindoor in the air, coupled with communal chariot revolutions, makes Sindoor Jatra a profound cultural spectacle, attracting global visitors eager to immerse in this community celebration.
