Tight Security and Detentions Mark Tibetan Monastery Memorials

Chinese authorities have enforced strict security measures surrounding Lungngn Monastery in Gade County's Golog region during memorial prayer ceremonies for the late Tibetan Buddhist leader, Tulku Hungkar Dorje Rinpoche, according to a Tibet Times report cited by Phayul.

Commencing on March 27, the four-day prayers marking the end of Rinpoche's death rites have seen an influx of Chinese police and military forces, severely restricting the movements and gatherings of local Tibetans and monastery residents.

The crackdown, characterized by intimidation tactics, included the removal of English-language signboards, a ban on sharing ceremony details digitally, and arbitrary detentions. Notably, Ugyen Jangchup, a monk, reportedly faced severe beatings during detention, raising concerns about extended custody and adding to community anxiety.
