The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has issued its latest brief, casting a spotlight on its global advocacy initiatives and expressing alarm over what it regards as China's persistent repression of Uyghurs, especially during the holy month of Ramzan. The brief includes recent reports indicating heavy surveillance measures imposed by authorities in the region of Xinjiang, known to Uyghurs as East Turkistan.

According to information from Radio Free Asia, Chinese authorities detained six Uyghur villagers in Hotan Prefecture on February 27 for allegedly 'secretly fasting.' Five of these individuals, all seniors over 70, were released following warnings and mandatory political education sessions. However, a 30-year-old man remains detained and may face criminal charges. Security measures reportedly include dawn raids where officials inspect homes for fasting activity.

Parallel to these developments, WUC delegates, led by President Turgunjan Alawdun, have been active at the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Vice President Zumretay Arkin, speaking at a Society for Threatened Peoples event, cautioned against increasing transnational repression exerted through intimidation and threats against the diaspora's families. Separately, Uyghur literary scholar Yalqun Rozi was honored with the Graciela Fernandez Meijide Human Rights Prize, spotlighting the ongoing plight of imprisoned Uyghur intellectuals.
