In a move that has sparked international criticism, Chinese authorities have sentenced Tibetan monk Palden Yeshi to six years in prison for imparting Tibetan language lessons to over 300 students during school holidays. This development underscores the increasing clampdown on Tibetan cultural practices, as detailed in reports by Radio Station Voice of Tibet and Phayul.

Palden Yeshi, associated with the Karze Monastery in Tehor, was detained on May 17, 2021, without prior notice. Anonymous sources revealed that he conducted informal Tibetan language classes, focusing on reading and writing, drawing more than 300 students. Chinese authorities, however, interpreted these educational activities as unlawful, failing to provide clarity to the family regarding his detention and charges.

The situation worsened with Yeshi's transfer to Chushul Prison in the Tibet Autonomous Region, where he was officially sentenced. While no detailed charges have been disclosed, it's believed his advocacy for Tibetan language education led to the imprisonment. This incident has deeply affected his family, with his father suffering emotional distress before passing away in 2022. The case highlights persistent concerns about the suppression of cultural and linguistic expression in Tibet under Chinese rule.
